Accidental Discoveries

Vernors Ginger Ale

Vernors Ginger Ale was created in Detroit and became the first soda pop made in the United States. In 1862, pharmacist James Vernor was trying to create a new beverage when he was called away to serve in the Civil War. When he returned, four years later, the drink he had stored in an oak case had acquired a delicious gingery flavor.

Kellogg’s Corn Flakes

In 1898, W.K. Kellogg, and his brother, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, working at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, failed in their attempt to make granola when they accidentally flaked wheat berry. They were able to flake other vegetable products. They created what would become Kellogg’s Corn Flakes. Kellogg's was founded as the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company on February 19, 1906.  The Kellogg Company has made Battle Creek, Michigan the cereal capital of the world.
